Clancharlie Castle

The Man Who Laughs

Clancharlie Castle is the ancestral fortress from which Gwynplaine takes the Clancharlie title. Though it is not the setting of a narrated scene in the available evidence, its historical age and place within his inheritance make it a concrete emblem of the authority he has unexpectedly acquired.

History and Title

Barkilphedro identifies Clancharlie Castle as the source of Gwynplaine’s title and says it was already a fortress in the time of Edward the Elder. The account gives no further description of its appearance or precise location; its significance rests instead on its antiquity and its connection to the inherited lordship.

Place in the Inheritance

The castle belongs to a much wider estate. Barkilphedro tells Gwynplaine that his lordship includes nineteen bailiwicks, their villages and inhabitants, and about eighty thousand vassals and tenants. At Clancharlie, he says, Gwynplaine is a judge and holds a baron’s court; the castle’s name thus stands within an inheritance that combines property with judicial and seigneurial authority.

The scale of that inheritance is reinforced by its other holdings and privileges: eight barons’ courts, rights over turf-cutting and alabaster quarries, and an annual income of forty thousand pounds. Clancharlie Castle is therefore presented not merely as a title-bearing fortress, but as the historic center associated with a lordship Barkilphedro compares to a kingdom.
